About SAIF
The Sophisticated Analytical Instruments Facility (SAIF) is a National Facility established in STIC by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. SAIF was established in STIC through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by DST and STIC in the year 2003. As per this MoU, DST shall provide funds to the tune of Rs. 205 lakhs for five years (2003-2008) for the procurement of sophisticated analytical instruments for SAIF. All recurring expenditure required for running the SAIF, including staff salary, consumables, electricity etc. shall be borne by STIC. STIC shall provide necessary building space to house the instruments
Objectives of SAIF
The objectives of Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF) at STIC, Kochi are as follows:
(i) To carry out analysis of samples received from the scientists / institutes;
(ii) To provide facilities of sophisticated analytical instruments to scientists and other users from academic institutes, R&D laboratories and industries to enable them to carry out measurements for R&D work;
(iii) To acquire and develop capability for preventive maintenance and repair of sophisticated instruments;
(iv) To organize short term courses/workshops on the use and application of various instruments and analytical techniques;
(v) To train technicians for maintenance and operation of sophisticated instruments; and
(vi) To undertake design and development of instruments / accessories of existing instruments.
Organizational structure
The SAIF, established at STIC, has a Facility Management Committee (FMC) constituted by DST. The FMC is to oversee and guide the activities of SAIF. The FMC consists of a representative of DST and experts nominated by STIC in consultation with DST. The FMC shall monitor the performance of the SAIF and suggest measures to improve its performance. The Committee shall approve and forward half - yearly progress report of SAIF to DST. The Committee shall scrutinize the annual budget of the Facility before it is submitted to DST. The Chairman of the FMC is the Director of STIC. The FMC is to meet twice in a year and forward its report about SAIF to DST. The FMC is authorized to fix the charges to be levied for the services rendered by SAIF.
